Every year, brilliant applicants get rejected for reasons that have nothing to do with their ability. Avoid these five.
1. Missing the eligibility fine print
Work-experience minimums, age caps, and "must return home" clauses disqualify people who never read them. Check eligibility before writing a single essay.
2. One essay for every scholarship
Reviewers can smell a recycled statement. Tailor the "why this programme" section every time — it's the fastest quality signal.
3. Weak or generic recommenders
A glowing letter from someone who barely knows you is worse than an honest one from someone who does. Brief your referees with your goals and the specific scholarship.
4. Leaving it to the deadline
References go missing, transcripts take weeks, servers crash at midnight. Aim to submit three days early.
5. Ignoring the word count and format
Going over the limit or ignoring the prompt reads as "can't follow instructions" — a real disqualifier for funded programmes.
FundedAfrica's application tracker keeps every deadline, document, and reference in one place so none of these slip.
